Shifting Sands - Shifting Time - we went back to 1879

Corrections to my hurried blog yesterday..   South African President is Jacob Guma and the battle renactment was at Isandlawana!!!!

Back at Ansteys - great to smell the sea air again! and online!

It was an exciting weekend.   Drove 4 hours into Battlefield areas, west of Durban.

20th JAN 2012

Stayed in Rourkes Drift Hotel which actually overlooks the drift where John Rourke helped 330 wagons (each pulled by 16 oxen) over the water on rafts on 21st Jan 1879.

Had a great crowd-they were the syndicate that won the Derby with Mr Motivator a few years ago!!

SATURDAY 21ST JAN
THULANI brought the battles to life...

One minute we are Zulu Chiefs planning our strategy on top of the hills; the next minute we are Redcoats trying to defend our camp.  He kept us awake all day describing the tactics and the fact that the British invaded the Zulu territory, crossing at Rourkes Drift and the 25,000 Zulus, were just protecting their land.  They slaughtered the 4000 British.   Then later that day, it was a break away group of Zulus who crossed at Rourkes Drift despite the fact that Chief Cetewayo had told them not to go into the Natal area.  The British won the battle at Rourkes Drift.

There are many interpretations on the Battles at Rourkes Drift & Isandlawana but all locals insist the film Zulu was no where near the truth.

SUNDAY 22nd JAN 2012
THE RE-ENACTMENT OF THE BATTLE OF ISANDLAWANA

Special invite as guests!

The Zulu people are happy, kind and very friendly.

Their skirts of animal fur cost £2000 alone & the chiefs wear leopard skins around their shoulders which are even more expensive.

Brian Kirby goes round the world doing re-enactments

 The large sign states:
'Celebrating the Triumph of the Zulu Nation
over colonialsm in 1879'
They are very keen not to offend the British by saying - the Zulus slaughtered us!

South African President Jacob Guma arrives with his bodyguards!  He is a Zulu.

You can see the British in their red jackets lying dead on the ground.

The Zulus carrying their wounded.
What a Day!
