SHIFTING TRAVELLERS
Having a backpackers hostel below our beautiful apartment, allows us to join all these very interesting people for a drink at the bar. We have got to know some amazing characters.
Especially the two Davids - the first, who is the crocodile hunter and game keeper, never been out of Africa, rarely wears shoes and hasnt seen his two kids for 9 years and never seen his 7 year old grandson. His wife caught malaria and some other disease and had to go back to UK 4 months ago so hasnt seen her for a while either. So Crocodile Dave (so like Dundee) was travelling to Dublin in his one pair of boots, a white shirt donated by Dan, one pair of socks from a friend and a fleece...... He said he will ask to keep the airlines blanket, cut a hole in the top and wear that around Dublin... Such a nice man and wonderful character. He would give his one pair of boots to someone if he felt they needed them more than him! His family are joining him in Dublin on Friday - he was incredibly nervous and excited.
He is hoping to buy a big van and get it down to Cape Town and then do overland tours right through Africa. Sounds fun.......... we will keep in contact with him!
The other David and his wife, come from Cornwall. This Dave is the Boatswain of the St Agnes lifeboat and again, another interesting character. This couple spend 3 months at the beginning of each year backpacking and they are doing many provinces in Africa via a greyhound bus! They are our age!
The picture is of Lifeboat Dave helping a young lad with his surfboard.
Even our good friends Clive and Sandie are on the move and should have arrived in Johannesburg for Sandie's cousins wedding and they will be travelling through Gauteng, Kruger and down to KZN in a couple of weeks. We hope to catch up.
Bill & Karin from Vancouver are getting ready for their three month travels to Europe, staying in Casa Basilia in Calahonda, first. We hope they have a wonderful holiday there.
Tash & Rudi are somewhere in Hawaii, we think. We love their home here at Ansteys - will they get us out!!!! There are many lovely artefacts in Tash's house and below is my favourite. A cross made out of drift wood. I will have a go making this definitely for our hut.
Finally, another wonderful African saying - on a coffee cup!! "Travelling opens a window to the world"
Xhosa (one of the 450 African Tribes)
We too are travelling north tomorrow for a few days seeing game hopefully!!
